Residential Front Door Replacement

Your home's front door generally needs to be replaced every 30 years as a result of regular wear and tear. Dings, dents and peeling paint seem like easy fixes, but small issues with your front door can lead to bigger overall issues in your home if not taken care of. You can read our previous article outlining 3 reasons why you need a residential front door replacement for more information.

Here's a quick look at the steps involved in a residential front door replacement.

1. Setting a budget

Front doors come in a variety of styles and materials, and you should be able to find one that fits your budget. The main options include:

  • Steel - The most affordable option, and a good choice for most climates. It offers strength and durability, and requires only minimal maintenance and upkeep.

  • Fibreglass - Fibreglass doors come in an wide variety of styles, and you can often get the look of real wood at a budget price. Fibreglass is built to withstand any climate, and requires minimal maintenance.

  • Wood - If you want to go big, wood may be the best material for you. Wood doors look amazing and can be custom crafted. They should also be repainted or refinished every year or two to prevent splitting and warping, so they require a great deal of upkeep.

You might also want to consider adding a double door, or a door with decorative glass. Anything beyond the standard options will increase your costs, but if it's worth it to you, go for it!

When considering your budget, don't forget to include installation. You may be tempted to forego a window and door service in an attempt to get the job done yourself, but we're here to tell you there are many benefits to putting away your ladder and choosing to work with the professionals. For more, check our article on hiring a door service vs. DIY.

Set a budget and stick to it.

2. Measuring for a new front door

We have written about this process extensively here (will add link when published), but here's a quick review of the process:

  • Remove interior trim of existing door to expose the rough opening stud to stud and confirm opening is square

  • Measure width: Take three horizontal measurements and record the smallest measurement

  • Measure height: Take three vertical measurements and record the smallest measurement.

  • Measure the thickness of the door (Normal thickness is around 1-3/4″)

  • Measure the hinge locations from the top of the door to the top of the hinge

  • Measure the hinge width and height

  • Remove the door handle (and deadbolt, if you have one) and measure from the top of the door to the centre of the hole. Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the hole

After following these steps, you're ready to tackle the next stage of the residential front door replacement process.

3. Purchase and installation

You've set a budget and made your measurements, and you're now ready to purchase a new front door. Don't forget to read our article on 3 things to know before buying to make sure you've got everything covered.

Once you have your door and are ready to install, we recommend hiring a professional service, and that's for a few reasons.

  • Savings: If you have limited experience with this type of work, you risk causing damage to your door frame or newly-purchased door in the process, as well as a faulty installation that could lead to heating/cooling issues or even break ins. Additional repairs or replacements will end up costing you more in the long run.

  • Proper tools: Don't underestimate the necessity of being equipped with all necessary and specialized tools needed to complete the job with greatest efficiency. You will also get the peace of mind of workmanship guarantees and a warranty by relying on the pros.

  • Accident Coverage: You need craftsmen that are factory trained professionals, who take great pride in their work, and who use great care when working on your home. It's also important to rely on people who have Workplace Safety Insurance Board coverage in the event of accident.

In order to get the job done right and on budget, hiring a door service is the way to go.
