Measuring a Door 101
How to measure a door
A failure to get this done right the first time could result in purchasing a wrong-sized door and having to begin all over again. This video offers a helpful visual of the process:
Here's how to get this done in five easy steps:
1. Remove interior trim of existing door to expose the rough opening stud to stud
2. Measure width first and determine widest standard size. Standard outside frame widths are 31.5, 33.5, 35.5, 37.5 inches, meaning your rough opening should be approximately 1 inch wider than your door frame to allow for shims and insulation.
3. Measure the height of the opening. Standard outside frame heights are 82.5 and 97.5 inches, so your rough opening should be 83-84 inches.
4. Measure the thickness of the door from somewhere close to the door handle.
5. Once your size is measured, you will need to determine if the hinges are on the right side or the left side. Note: left and right is determined from the outside of the house or outside of the room facing the door. Then determine if you want the door to swing in or out. Measure the surrounding area to make sure there will be no impediments when opening.
What You Should Know Before Purchasing Your New Door
Once you have gone through the steps of measuring a door, there's a few things you'll want to consider before purchasing a door for replacement.
The look you want to achieve: A door replacement presents an opportunity for a quick and cost-effective refresh on the look of your home. Your front door is a focal point of your home, so an upgrade means instant curb appeal. Think about the colour, whether you want to add windows, and the door handle - all of which should fit with the overall look of your house. (Will insert door trends 2019 when published).
The materials you want: The various types of material include wood, fibreglass, aluminum and vinyl. You'll want to make sure it's secure and able to protect your home from weather and potential break-ins.
The warranty: The door should come with some assurance of quality over an extended period of time. Make sure whoever is installing it for you passes along that information so you know who to contact if the door itself proves to be problematic.
